Hagar’s Song, the latest album from long-time ECM luminary Charles Lloyd, is a thrilling duo recording with Jason Moran. The pianist was a key member of Lloyd’s latter-day quartet, performing on the albums Rabo de Nube, Mirror and Athens Concert. This stunning new release features pieces dear to Lloyd including compositions by Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. The centerpiece on the album is the title suite, dedicated to Lloyd’s great-great-grandmother.

Hagar’s Song is a deeply intimate, intuitive offering from saxophonist Charles Lloyd and pianist Jason Moran, who has been a key part of Lloyd’s quartet since 2008. The program is a collection of standards and originals, as well as one thorny, angular free improvisation (“Pictogram”). The title piece is a five-part suite dedicated to the memory of Lloyd’s great-great grandmother, who spent most of her life as a slave. Its various sections reflect the harshness of that life, as well as moments of hope and determination. This work is not always “comfortable” to listen to, and it’s not meant to be, but it is musically rich and emotionally taut. Lloyd has always celebrated his deep love of jazz and pop traditions, and those are in abundance here. The near-symbiotic dialogue the pair share on Billy Strayhorn’s “Pretty Girl” and George Gershwin’s “Bess You Is My Woman Now” offers both dialogic imagination as well as deep listening. (On the latter, Lloyd reveals how supple his tonal reach remains on the tenor as he nears 75; he sweeps from its middle register to something closer to the alto’s.) The swinging read of “Mood Indigo” commences conventionally, but Moran’s deft, blues-drenched, physical stride lends an urgency to the conversation. Likewise his punchy approach on Earl Hines’ “Rosetta,” where Lloyd takes the melody and opens up its joy vein, while Moran pumps it with rhythmic and lyric invention courtesy of his amazing left hand. Lloyd’s love of rock and pop has its place here, too. On Bob Dylan’s ballad “I Shall Be Released,” Moran begins with a single repeating note, then a lone chord, as Lloyd tentatively states the melody. But by the second verse, he’s quoting from Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” as Moran moves its harmonic base to the modal. Lloyd brings it back via an emotional blues, but his tenor moves through its registers picking bits and pieces of the lyric line to meditate upon and explore with Moran. The closer, a reading of Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows” is just gorgeous. Moran’s elaboration on the harmony in the intro sets it up outside its known parameters. Lloyd quotes the refrain and then takes the lyric line, exploring time and memory — Lloyd ran around with the Beach Boys in Southern California in the late ’60s. Satisfied, he turns it over to Moran to finish with a close, tender harmonic statement that whispers to a finish. Hagar’s Song finds Lloyd and Moran at their most naturally curious and deeply attentive best, offering a conversation so intimate the listener may occasionally feel she is eavesdropping.

Charles Lloyd has always led exceptional bands, and this is one of the finest. Following on from the live “Rabo de Nube” which won both the Readers and Critics Polls of Jazz Times, here is a studio album from the quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland. Familiar material is reappraised and transformed in this session recorded in California in December 2009.

When Charles Lloyd showcased his quartet in a live setting on 2008’s Rabo de Nube, it was one of the more exciting, free-flowing dates of that year. It was physical, full of intense engagement and fiery energy. On that date, he performed a number of tunes he’d recorded before, along with new compositions. Mirror, recorded with the same band — drummer Eric Harland, pianist Jason Moran, and bassist Reuben Rogers — in a Santa Barbara studio, is, as the title suggests, a mirror image of the previous outing. Here too, the saxophonist revisits some older material with, thanks in large part to his sidemen, new ears. The material is mostly gently swinging ballads and outré investigations showcasing an even more spiritual side to Lloyd’s playing and arranging. But it also displays the great intuitive nuances this band is capable of. While the set opens with an elegant and gently swinging reading of the standard “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” it’s the follow-up, the spiritual “Go Down Moses,” that showcases the group’s persona with its modal, questioning concerns, while keeping the tune firmly in the church. The title track appeared on 1989’s Canto, and is here performed with the kind of deep commitment and sense of interdependent energy only time and wisdom can impart. Another tune from that album, “Desolation Sound,” while still a ballad, features a lot more engagement from the players here: Moran’s solo looks in and through the changes to find a way outside and gets there. Harland’s shimmering breaks add more crackle than on the original. Likewise, “The Water Is Wide” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are performed, in their restrained way, more energetically than they were on their respective albums. One of Mirror’s great surprises is a tender reading of the Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No.” While the melody is inescapable, Lloyd very quickly transforms it into a jazz ballad of haunting, romantic beauty. On a pair of Monk tunes here — “Ruby, My Dear” and “Monk’s Mood” — Moran’s own musical personality is given free rein. He expresses it with his deft senses of rhythmic and harmonic intuition, underscoring unexpected phrases and elaborating on others. Ultimately, Mirror is another Lloyd triumph. It may not shake the rafters with its kinetics, but it does dazzle with the utterly symbiotic interplay between leader and sidemen.

Eberhard Weber played hundreds of concerts in his time as a member of the Jan Garbarek Group, and each of them included an extended feature for the bassist alone, often effectively a spontaneous composition rather than a ‘bass solo’ in strict jazz sense. For “Résumé” Weber has returned to recordings of these solo sequences and reworked them into an album with its own sense of flow. The unique sound of Weber’s customised electric bass is heard here mostly in the context of his own keyboard settings and treatments, but also augmented by the saxophones and overtone flute of Jan Garbarek (on three tracks) and by the percussion of Michael DiPasqua. Based on live recordings made between 1990 and 2007 at locations from Karlsruhe to Santiago, the album was mixed in the South of France by Weber, Manfred Eicher, Michael DiPasqua and Gérard de Haro in 2011.

On this ECM release, bassist Eberhard Weber has taken various solo pieces from live performances spanning 17 years with Jan Garbarek, rearranged them, and added other instruments to create new compositions. Since Weber can no longer play bass because of a stroke he suffered in 2007, the method he invokes on Résumé allows him to create new compositions and maintain his pensive creativity. Along with Weber’s electric standup bass, keyboards, and electronics, he enlisted the saxophones and flute of Jan Garbarek for the tracks “Tübingen,” “Amsterdam,” and “Bath,” and percussionist Michael DiPasqua on “Bochum” and “Lazise.” The live performances originally took place in Germany, Austria, Italy, France, England, the Netherlands, and Chile. –AllMusic Review by Al Campbell

„Along with other bebop sides Navarro did for Capitol and Blue Note, these Savoy cuts are part of the trumpeter’s essential recordings. And being mindful of his early demise in 1950, it’s amazing to realize that the Memorial album is one of several incredible sessions Navarro was able to produce in just over a two-year period during the late ’40s. Teaming up with frequent musical partner Tadd Dameron, Navarro reels off fluid solos on both the outstanding Dameron original ‘The Tadd Walk’ and a second impressive swinger ‘Be Bop Carroll.’ The remaining sides from this date feature vocalist Kay Penton, who, while not being terribly exciting, delivers some beguilingly languid lines; the rest of the top-flight group includes altoist Ernie Henry, bassist Curly Russell, and drummer Kenny Clarke. The second Navarro session here includes classics like ‘Webb City’ and ‘Fat Boy,’ and features first-tier beboppers like trumpeter Kenny Dorham, altoist Sonny Stitt, pianist Bud Powell, and Clarke again on drums. As a sort of bonus, there are four additional tunes from this same session. Amazingly, though, Navarro is not on board, but the balance is quickly redressed with some high-quality originals and more incredible solo work by Dorham, Stitt, and Powell. Capuchin Swing is an album by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded in 1960 and released on the Blue Note label.

One of Jackie McLean’s more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960’s Capuchin Swing finds the bebop alto saxophonist in fine form on a mix of covers and originals. While his future fascination with Ornette Coleman’s free-form innovations can be sensed in some of the solos here, the majority of the album is in a classic hard bop vein. Like contemporaries Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, and Lee Morgan, though, McLean doesn’t just churn out pat jam-session fare, but comes up with consistently provocative charts and solos. Eschewing ballads, McLean focuses on mid- to fast-tempo swingers and blues. Standouts include originals like “Francisco” and “Condition Blue” and choice renditions of “Just for Now” and “Don’t Blame Me.” McLean enlists a sparkling lineup of hard bop stars, including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. Mitchell particularly impresses, matching many of McLean’s own inspired flights with his supple and progressive playing. Along with other fine Blue Note titles like Jackie’s Bag and Bluesnik, Capuchin Swing makes for a great introduction to McLean’s extensive catalog.

When Jackie McLean’s Let Freedom Ring was released in 1962, it was soon recognized as a landmark and masterpiece in McLean’s discography. A hard bop sax player, McLean explored new avenues in jazz’s avant-garde styles on the album, as well as experimenting with the tonal limits of his instrument.

The debut recording from James Falzone’s Renga Ensemble, handpicked by Falzone, drawing together some of the most diverse and adventurous clarinet and saxophone players working in jazz and improvised music today.

Superb Chicago clarinetist and composer James Falzone has adapted jazz-derived improvisation to Middle Eastern traditions, played Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, and paid homage to Benny Goodman, so I’m almost used to seeing him launch rigorous, conceptually interesting projects. Still, his new six-member clarinet choir, Renga, is especially exciting: Falzone, Ken Vandermark, Jason Stein, and Keefe Jackson are joined by visiting musicians Ben Goldberg and Ned Rothenberg, two of the most original clarinetists of the past two decades. The group takes its name from a centuries-old form of collaborative Japanese poetry, where two or three poets blend their words into a single meditative work. “This struck me as an apt metaphor for an ensemble of improvising musicians,” Falzone explains. Three members of Renga occasionally play saxophones, but clarinets dominate, ranging from the hefty contrabass to the sopranino E-flat horn; in this context, timbral exploration will be just as important to the group’s music as Falzone’s longtime interest in blurring the lines between improvisation and composition.

“While there are a plethora of females out there purporting to be jazz singers today, very few can hold a candle to the legends of days gone by. Most are OK, but tend to have a sameness to their interpretations of the songs they choose to sing that borders on the boring. Yet one, and she is a new name to me, who stands out from the same old same old pack of today is jazz singer Lyn Stanley. … What will catch your attention as it did mine was both how she has something new to add to these standards as well as how she seems to have a deep understanding of each song she sings. Another aspect of her singing is that she sounds like a jazz singer, not a pop singer trying to sing jazz. She modulates her tone and phrasing in the same way a tenor sax player would handle his instrument during a solo. This is something lacking in so many of today’s jazz singers. Just listen to her sing ‘I’m Walking’ from her Potions album for a brilliant example of what I’m talking about.

Recorded in PCM but mixed in analog and then converted to DSD for release as a Hybrid SACD, there is a richness, a liveness, a realness to the sound of these discs that will fair take your breath away. I don’t what magic Ms. Stanley and her team uses here (and she’s not saying), but the results are such that these may very well be one of (if not the) finest sounding SACDs in my collection.
