Makaya McCraven – In The Moment (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1 kHz | Time – 1:13:41 minutes | 810 MB | Genre: Jazz
Official Digital Download – Source: Bandcamp | @ International Anthem

Drummer/producer Makaya McCraven brings together “future-is-now drumming” with his roots in jazz and world music to form his unique and powerful sound. Regarded as “one of Chicago’s most versatile and in demand drummers” (Chicago Reader) and described by Downbeat Magazine as “exceptional on the drums,” Makaya McCraven moves between genres at lightning speed. “In The Moment” is nearly 48 hours of live improvised performance recorded at 1 venue over 12 months and 28 shows – culled, cut, rendered, and remixed into 19 potent pieces of organic beat music. This is music made by a 21st century man who sees no need to suppress his hip hop chops or rock spirit in an effort to fit in and be dubbed a jazz drummer.

There is no shortage of all-improvised music events happening in Chicago, but many of them focus on so-called nonidiomatic free improvisation, where the players eschew conventional notions of melody, harmony, and rhythm in search of something decidedly abstract and new. Makaya McCraven seemed to be after something different, at least based on the results turning up on In the Moment, which are unabashedly groove oriented. The drummer meticulously edited and remixed the raw material; you can hear looped passages, bit of room ambience or dialogue reused and jiggered into different pieces, so that the jazz-driven sensibilities of his collaborators are transformed into something that occasionally sounds closer to instrumental hip-hop or taut funk. Among the players that joined the drummer are bassists Matt Ulery, Joshua Abrams, and Junius Paul, trumpeter Marquis Hill, guitarist Jeff Parker, vibist Justin Thomas, and tenor saxophonists De’Sean Jones and Tony Barba.

Malene Mortensen – Can’t Help It (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 48:32 minutes | 919 MB | Genre: Jazz
Official Digital Download – Source: OtoToy | Artwork: Front cover + PDF

Singer Malene Mortensen has been around on the Danish scene for a decade-and-a-half gradually getting better known beyond her native land as a singer with a memorable pure-toned voice displaying a good deal of range and one who can combine Great American Songbook material with more recent repertoire in a contemporary modern-jazz style without being remotely cheesy.

But she can be a little bit too middle of the road sometimes, despite her strong technical and interpretative skills. Here with a strong empathetic core band featuring Christian McBride pianist Christian Sands, bassist Burniss Earl Travis II and, again another Christian McBride connection, Terreon ‘Tank’ Gulley on drums, the album gradually moves away from the Great American Songbook at the beginning via ‘Honeysuckle Rose,’ ‘Alone Together,’ and Bacharach/David song ‘Alfie’ to some of her own co-written songs before returning with a flourish to standards fare and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘My Favorite Things.’ Recorded in New York in March 2014 Can’t Help It could do with more of an edge and a few more risks here and there to really shift Mortensen out of her comfort zone however tasteful and polished an artist she continues to be.

Tracklist:
01 – Every Day
02 – Alone Together – Sweet Solitude
03 – Alfie
04 – Honeysuckle Rose
05 – Beneath The Endless Blue
06 – The Rest Of Mine

4.5 Stars – Very Good Plus – “..Torme has outdone himself…His voice is warm, rich, and pure, a mature vocal instrument. His perceptive phrasing is sheer delight…This is truly jazz singing..” – Down Beat

Though the nominal concept for Mel Tormé’s Swings Shubert Alley is Broadway standards, this last moment of pure Tormé brilliance moves much too fast and hard for the concept to be anything but pure swing. Of course it starts out with a bang with the punchy “Too Close for Comfort.” Tormé sounds like he’s racing the band to the finish of the song on this one (and a few others, like “Too Darn Hot” and “Surrey with the Fringe on Top”), on the latter he repeats the title over and over again with that exuberant voice. As with his other classic swing albums, Tormé does insert a few slower songs; here, “Once in Love with Amy,” “A Sleepin’ Bee” and “Old Devil Moon” are downtempo, with a smile. The overall mood, however, is unrestrained enthusiasm, and it makes for an excellent record. –AllMusic Review by John Bush

About the Mastering
Mastering was completed by Kevin Reeves at Sterling Sound NYC, using the original 1/4″ analog masters from the Verve Records vault. The masters were played on a modified Studer A820 with Wolke Butterfly heads and converted to digital at 192khz/24bit resolution using the DCS 904 converter and Sterling’s proprietary mastering systems. As always, the most direct signal path was maintained throughout the mastering process.

The iconic Mel Torme, one of jazz’s most phenomenal vocalists, delivered a masterpiece with his 1960 recording, Mel Torme Swings Shubert Alley. One of his several collaborations with exquisite pianist/arranger Marty Paich, Torme swung hard with this loud and fast collection of Broadway standards. With his exuberant and husky vocals, Torme tackles classics like “Too Close For Comfort,” “Too Darn Hot” and “Old Devil Moon.” The album finds Torme in top form and is a must own for any audiophile who loves vocal jazz at its finest.

The first of two studio albums by the Bill Evans-Scott LaFaro-Paul Motian trio (both of which preceded their famous engagement at the Village Vanguard), this Portrait in Jazz reissue contains some wondrous interplay, particularly between pianist Evans and bassist LaFaro, on the two versions of “Autumn Leaves.” Other than introducing Evans’ “Peri’s Scope,” the music is comprised of standards, but the influential interpretations were far from routine or predictable at the time. LaFaro and Motian were nearly equal partners with the pianist in the ensembles and their versions of such tunes as “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “Someday My Prince Will Come” (which preceded Miles Davis’ famous recording by a couple years) are full of subtle and surprising creativity. A gem.

Cannonball Adderly with Bill Evans – Know What I Mean (1961) [APO Remaster 2002]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 51:18 minutes | Scans included | 2,14 GB

What’s better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Connie Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It’s a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvelous. Adderley’s playing on “Waltz for Debby” is both muscular and sensitive, as it is on the other Evans composition here, a modal ballad called “Know What I Mean?” Other treats include the sprightly “Toy” and two takes of the Gershwin classic “Who Cares?” The focus here is, of course, on Adderley’s excellent post-bop stylings, but it’s also interesting to hear Evans playing with a rhythm section as staid and conservative as Kay and Heath (both charter members of the Modern Jazz Quartet). It’s hard to imagine any fan of mainstream jazz not finding much to love on this very fine recording.

01. Waltz For Debby

Sessions in any genre of music are all too often described as “sublime,” but seldom has that description been better deserved than with this relaxed hard bop classic. One looks to other catchalls such as “effortless” and “loose,” but even those slight this amazing date by implying a lack of intensity — and intensity comes in all forms. For all intents and purposes, this is the first recorded meeting of what would become the famous Benny Golson/Art Farmer Jazztet (albeit without Farmer), a group most commonly associated with its 1960 Chess session, Meet the Jazztet. Curtis Fuller’s next date, The Curtis Fuller Jazztet, and his appearance on the Chess date, only compound this point. Like perhaps Jimmy Smith’s flagship, The Sermon, Blues-ette’s brilliance manifests itself not only within the individual solos but also in the way the group functions as a collective. One gets the impression that these tunes could have continued for hours in the studio without the slightest lack of interest on anyone’s part. This might be because many of the themes presented here are so basic and seemingly obvious that they don’t seem like anything to write home about upon first listen. A day or so later, when you’re walking down the street to the tempo of the title track, you may begin to think otherwise. These are some exceptionally catchy heads and many have since become standards. As far as individual performances are concerned, you’re not likely to find better solos by any of the members of this quintet than you will here, though they all have extensive and very high-quality catalogs themselves. Picking highlights is a moot point. Blues-ette is best experienced as an entire LP. It would have surely made a greater impact upon its initial release had it been on a more high-profile label, such as Columbia or Blue Note, but there’s no sense worrying about that now. Any serious jazz collection is incomplete without this record.

Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | @ Verve Music

This 1959 release from Oscar Peterson is one of several albums he recorded in the 1950s dedicated to specific composers. On this collection Peterson revisits several of the Harold Arlen songs he included on a previous album years earlier, in a trio configuration here backed by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen.

The album demonstrate Peterson’s complete mastery of the works of Harold Arlen. Oscar is such a monster piano player that he does not need anyone to ‘comp’ while he is soloing, he does that as well … will be very welcome by all the Peterson fans and let us hope that anyone not familiar with his past work will take the opportunity to catch up.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96kHz  | Time – 1:18:17 minutes | 1,28 GB | Genre: Jazz

Recorded by Arne Akselberg on May 22, 2010 at Abbey Road, Studio 2, London, England
Piano: Bösendorfer Imperial

Oscar Peterson: Unmistakable is a collection of re-performances® created from unreleased recordings Peterson made during the seventies and eighties. Using ground-breaking sonic engineering techniques, Zenph Sound Innovations’ re-performances® capture the renowned jazz pianist playing at the height of his powers with some tracks never-before-heard by the public.
To create the Peterson re-performances, the Zenph team began with video recordings and several unreleased, private recordings of exceptional performances. Recorded in Studio Two at Abbey Road Studios in London, the Zenph team used a specially-outfitted Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand piano (Peterson was a Bösendorfer artist) to authentically recreate the distinct sounds of Peterson’s artistry. Zenph and Sony assembled world-renowned talent including GRAMMY®-winning producer David Lai, GRAMMY®-winning recording engineer Arne Akselberg, famed piano voicer Marc Wienert, and British electronics wizard Richard Shepherd. The album was recorded in stereo, binaural and surround-sound.

The sense of a powerful imagination in complete control of the instrument is tangible, as one follows the profoundly logical yet unpredictable fantasies that constitute Peterson’s improvisations. His effortless technique never comes across as mechanical or sterile, even with the piano bench conspicuously unoccupied.
– Andrew Quint, a writer for The Absolute Sound

Cole Porter’s tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson’s songbook series for Verve! Oscar’s fluid touch on the keys is perfect throughout – taking lots of chances, but always strongly following the melody – and rhythm accompaniment is from the usual team of Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

With Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, Oscar Peterson reworks Cole Porter and says something original and distinctive. Highlights include “Love for Sale,” “Night and Day,” and “I Love Paris.” –AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

Two years on since her last studio album, Susan Wong returns with a new album and a fresh direction. Working with Swiss based producer, Adrien Zerbini and Spanish guitarist Ignacio Lamas, Susan took a more ‘hands on’ approach for the 13 new songs recorded in Switzerland in early 2009. The opening song on the album is a bossa nova influenced version of the Earth Wind & Fire classic, September.

Susan Wong maintains a low-profile in her home town of Hong Kong yet is one of the best selling Hong Kong artists throughout South East Asia, and has a global following with releases in Japan, Germany, USA and Korea and a strong following in Brazil, Mexico and Spain. If you talk to many serious music fans in South East Asia they’ll give rave recommendations of Susan, who has been labeled as the ‘Queen of audiophile’, for her soft and sultry vocal style and laid-back music that has won the hearts of her wide and diverse legion of loyal fans. From those audiophile enthusiasts who enjoy listening to fine recordings to young listeners who adore the heart touching love songs the one thing that unites all her fans is their knowledge that they’ve discovered Asia’s best kept secret.

Susan’s recorded her second album, 511 for the evosound label in Geneva Switzerland with producer Adrien Zerbini. The album surprised many with her fresh bossa nova influenced versions of songs such as Michael Jackson’s Bille Jean and Hall’s & Oates Every Time You Go Away. Billie Jean received extensive airplay throughout S.E.Asia and a version on YouTube received over 450,000 views many of which came from viewers in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico further establishing Susan as one of Hong Kong’s mostly widely listened to artists throughout the world.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 00:41:21 minutes | 712 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: Q0buz | @ ECM Records GmbH
Recorded: August 2014, Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano

The second ECM album from Swiss/Italian trio Third Reel takes its open-plan music to another level. Emanuele Maniscalco, Nicolas Masson and Roberto Pianca all bring music into Third Reel, and each of them has his own distinct compositional signature, but from the outset their pieces are “always conceived as material for multiple, unpredictable developments,” as Maniscalco says. Compositional guidelines are like gateways into fields to explore. Masson’s elegant clarinet and lean-toned tenor are emphasized on this recording, Maniscalco floats between drums and piano, quietly lyrical on both instruments, and Pianca is most often a kind of real-time orchestrator, subtly enfolding the interaction with swelling sustained chords, or underlining it with thick drones.

Most of the first half of the album features primarily Emanuele Maniscalco’s compositions, and a chamber music feel, aligning the group on this showing to the reflective tradition of Giuffre and Bley – perhaps most evident on “Afterwards”, where Maniscalco’s rubato piano is shadowed by Masson’s clarinet. The second half of the programme is comprised mostly of Nicolas Masson’s pieces, including “White”, dedicated to Masabumi Kikuchi, as well as the album’s title track, its melody unfolded by a serpentine tenor line gaining steadily in power. Of Roberto Pianca’s pieces, “Lara’s Song” is a pensive ballad and “Happy People” less jolly than its title might imply, with active broken-time drums flickering behind a stately theme. Unusually for a group that takes chances with its material, Third Reel keeps things concise, none of the 13 pieces in the programme passing the five-minute mark.

Many More Days was recorded at Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano, in August 2014 with Manfred Eicher as producer.

‘Third Reel is as original as it is absorbing, richly rewarding repeated immersion in its highly individual sonic world.’ –London Jazz News

Noir jazz and after–midnight blues meet in the intriguing Twin Danger. Featuring singer Vanessa Bley (daughter of jazz innovator Paul Bley) and sax player Stuart Matthewman (co-founder of Sade, Sweetback, and producer for Grammy-winner Maxwell). The self-titled debut features a unique take on the alterna-hit, “No One Knows” by Queens of the Stone Age. Satisfying fans of jazz, rock, blues and soul, Twin Danger are for both the sophisticated aficionado and the young trendsetter.

“It refers to the alter ego, the part of you that can be wild or irrational or even destructive, but it’s still a part of you and not accepting that is what makes it dangerous. We’re making music to get lost in. It’s warm and beautiful but there are dark undercurrents revealing fundamental issues of the self. That’s what makes it Twin Danger.” –Vanessa Bley

Twin Danger’s 2015 self-titled debut showcases the Brooklyn duo’s smoky, neo-noirish jazz- and R&B-infused sound. Formed in 2013, Twin Danger is a collaboration between longtime Sade guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman and vocalist/guitarist Vanessa Bley. The daughter of jazz pianist Paul Bley, Vanessa Bley has a yearning yet cherubic vocal style that’s matched with subtle precision by Matthewman’s sophisticated horn arrangements and nuanced instrumental accents. In some ways, their languid, stylish aesthetic does bring to mind the distinctive pop Matthewman helped craft with Sade in the ’80s and ’90s. However, Twin Danger also have eclectic, wide-ranging tastes that — while certainly steeped in the moody, midtempo, brushes-on-snare-drum swing of jazz — can surprise, as on their torchy, theatrical reworking of Queens of the Stone Age’s “No One Knows.” Elsewhere, on cuts like “Pointless Satisfaction,” “Coldest Kind of Heart,” and “When It Counts,” you can also hear the influence of legendary cool jazz trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker and idiosyncratic singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. In fact, backing Twin Danger on most of the tracks is longtime Baker associate bassist Larry Grenadier. Also joining Twin Danger at various times are such virtuosic jazz and crossover pop sidemen as pianist Gil Goldstein (Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Sting), trumpeter Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan, Jens Lekman, Rufus Wainwright), drummer Joe Bonadio (Sting, Grover Washington, Jr., Chris Botti), and others. While Twin Danger are by no means a straight-ahead jazz group, the inclusion of such experienced jazz musicians proves how much care Matthewman and Bley have taken in shaping an album that works as much more than a genre-bending conceit. Ultimately, with Bley cooing at you through a half-lidded smile, and Matthewman blowing smoke rings around her with his saxophone, Twin Danger have crafted a jazz album perfect for the boozy, late-night afterglow of a rock club, a sound so besotted with heartache, you’ll want to close your eyes in reverie. –AllMusic Review by Matt Collar

Freddie Hubbard – Breaking Point (1964/2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 00:40:08 minutes | 1,59 MB | Genre: Jazz

Recorded: 1964, RCA Victor Studios, New York

One of the most exciting trumpeters of all time, Freddie Hubbard ranks right up there with Lee Morgan as the most vital trumpet player of the 1960s. An absolute powerhouse on his instrument, Freddie became renown for his fearless and fiery playing and his courageous and dramatic solos. Hubbard recorded many definitive albums for Blue Note during the first half of the ’60s including the 1964 gem Breaking Point! which finds the jazz master leading a rock solid quintet that includes James Spaulding (alto saxophone/flute), Ronnie Mathews (piano), Eddie Khan (bass) and Joe Chambers (drums) on a powerful and progressive 5-song set of four of his own originals and the Chambers classic “Mirrors.”

Immediately after leaving Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard formed his own quintet and set the modern jazz world on its collective ear with this incredible album. Beyond hard bop and into early creative territory, Hubbard explored a sonic deliverance based on his fiery personality and a refusal to stand still or be satisfied with standardized phrasings and nomenclature. His effective teaming with the unique alto saxophonist James Spaulding and pianist Ronnie Mathews is particularly telling, as this set of Hubbard originals and one from drummer Joe Chambers constitutes some of the most powerful jazz music of this time period. The expansive style of Andrew Hill is identifiable especially during the title track, with the piano of Mathews leading a startling charge of several short and swift mini-theme clarion bursts, moving into calypso. This is one of the more astonishing pieces ever conceived in modern music. “Blue Frenzy” and “D Minor Mint” both display uncanny original themes within mainstream frameworks, bearing the stamp of Hubbard’s fierce approach to post-Dizzy Gillespie-type trumpet. The former piece is an easy 24-bar blues activated into cool constraints via the style of Horace Silver but fired up by the antics of Mathews, while the latter track sports a chatty melody, humorously cackling onward. “Far Away” is the most intriguing piece rhythmically and sonically, moving from 6/4 and 3/4 to 12/6, again similar to Andrew Hill’s harmonic concept with Spaulding’s piquant flute accenting a hip, agile melody. The pure energy Hubbard injected into this ensemble, and the sheer originality of this music beyond peers like Miles Davis and Lee Morgan, identified Hubbard as the newest of new voices on his instrument. Breaking Point has stood the test of time as a recording far ahead of mid-’60s post-bop, and is an essential item for all listeners of incendiary progressive jazz. –AllMusic Review by Michael G. A pioneering figure in the world of contemporary jazz thanks to his fusion of pop, soul, electro, hip-hop, and French chansons with the music of his Lebanese roots, Ibrahim Maalouf is widely regarded as one of the most gifted trumpeters of his generation.

After his remarkably successful acoustic album Wind, Maalouf comes back with a more electric sound on Illusions. It is an album born out of, and designed for, performance on stage. It not only features the members of his regular band, Frank Woeste on the keyboard, François Delporte on the guitar, Xavier Roge on the drums et Laurent David on the bass, but also adds three more quarter-tone trumpeters (Youenn Le Cam, Yann Martin and Martin Saccardy) to bring a even higher level of dynamism to the sound. Maalouf says, ”I wanted this album to be festive and full of positive energy… it starts with the most tragic view of the world: cynicism. It then gradually evolves towards light and hope”.
